Positioning

Positioning is the place a brand claims in the customer’s mind relative to alternatives, and everything that follows from it.

What positioning is

Positioning is the place a brand claims in the customer’s mind relative to alternatives: the premium one, the affordable one, the sustainable one, the one for professionals.

It’s chosen by the brand and confirmed, or corrected, by the market.

Why positioning matters

Unpositioned brands get compared on price alone, because price is the only difference visible. A clear position gives shoppers a reason to choose that survives a cheaper alternative existing.

It also focuses everything: assortment, pricing, voice, and channels all follow from it.

What positioning decides

  • Who the brand is for, and implicitly who it isn’t
  • The axis of difference: quality, price, values, expertise
  • The competitive frame: what you’re compared against
  • The price band the position can sustain

Frequently asked questions

How do you find a defensible position?

At the intersection of what customers want, what competitors neglect, and what you can credibly deliver. Missing any leg, it collapses: wanted and neglected but undeliverable is fantasy.

Can positioning change later?

Yes, expensively: repositioning means re-teaching the market who you are, against the memory of who you were. Better to position deliberately early than drift into one by default.
