Post-Purchase Upsell

A post-purchase upsell is the one-click offer after payment, the only upsell that can’t cost the sale.

What a post-purchase upsell is

A post-purchase upsell is the offer after payment: the order is complete, and before the thank-you page a one-click addition appears, accepted or declined without re-entering payment, appended to the same shipment.

Why post-purchase upsells matter

It’s the only upsell with zero checkout risk: the sale is already banked, so the offer can’t cost the conversion, only add to it. Buyers are also at peak agreement, they just said yes, and the one-click mechanics remove every friction except the decision itself, which is why the format became the default AOV lever in modern checkout stacks.

Running the post-purchase slot

  • Offer what the order implies: the refill, the accessory, the second unit discounted
  • Honor the one-click promise: no forms, instant add, same shipment where possible
  • Cap the sequence: one offer, maybe a down-sell after a no, never a corridor
  • Test by order context: what converts after product A isn’t what converts after B

Frequently asked questions

Why not just offer it before payment?

Because pre-payment offers can cost the order: every added decision before the card clears is abandonment risk. Post-purchase moves the ask to where a no costs nothing, which changes the math of how aggressive an offer can afford to be.

What should the offer discount, if anything?

Whatever the margin survives at the attach rates the slot earns: many stores run the second unit or the consumable at a real discount, knowing the incremental order carries no acquisition cost. The floor is contribution, not habit.
