Progressive Profiling
Progressive profiling learns about the customer in installments, matching each ask to the trust available.
What progressive profiling is
Progressive profiling is learning about the customer in installments: instead of one long form nobody finishes, the store asks a little at each natural moment, signup, first purchase, the follow-up email, until a rich profile accumulates painlessly.
Why progressive profiling matters
The data a store wants and the data a stranger will give are different sizes: demand everything up front and the form abandons, ask for one email now and one preference later and both get answered. Profiling in installments matches the asking to the trust available at each stage, and it keeps declarations current, this season’s size and interests, not a stale intake form from two years ago.
The asking calendar
- At capture: the minimum, an email, maybe one segmenting question
- At purchase: what the order itself reveals, plus one natural add-on question
- Post-purchase: occasion, use case, and how-found, asked at goodwill’s peak
- In the relationship: preference prompts, quizzes, and review requests, each earning its answer
Frequently asked questions
How much should the first form ask?
As close to nothing as the use allows: every added field costs completions, and most of what stores request up front is never used anyway. The discipline is asking only what the next message needs, and trusting the installment plan to gather the rest.
How is progressive profiling implemented without feeling like surveillance?
By asking, visibly, and using what’s answered: questions in emails and quizzes read as service; silently merged tracking reads as watching. Each ask should change something the customer can see, and each answer should be editable in the preference center it feeds.
