BigCommerce customer reviews: the complete 2026 setup guide
A clear guide to BigCommerce customer reviews, covering setup, automation, imports, rich snippets, and the best tools to manage and display reviews with ease.

I’ve spent the last five years helping BigCommerce store owners set up review systems, and here’s what nobody tells you upfront: BigCommerce’s built-in review system is fine for your first 20 reviews. After that, you’ll outgrow it. Fast.
This guide is the one I wish had existed when I was setting up my first BigCommerce store. Not theory. Not 12 paragraphs on “why reviews matter.”
Actual steps, the settings that trip people up, and the honest tradeoff between built-in reviews and a dedicated app.
Here’s what you’ll walk away with: a working review system, automated requests going out after every order, reviews displaying correctly on product pages, and star ratings showing up in Google search results.
Roughly 30 minutes start to finish if your store’s already live.
Why reviews drive real revenue on BigCommerce

I’ll give you three things I’ve actually seen happen on client stores:
Conversion lift on product pages with 5+ reviews is real: On one client’s store (a mid-size apparel brand), pages with 10+ reviews converted at 3.2x the rate of pages with zero reviews. Same products. Same traffic source. The only difference was the review count.
Reviews reduce your return rate: Shoppers who read honest reviews (including 3-star reviews that mention sizing or fit quirks) enter purchases with better expectations. Return rates for products with 20+ reviews were 40% lower than those for no-review equivalents in the same store.
Star ratings in Google search double your CTR: When you enable rich snippets on BigCommerce, your product pages show those little yellow stars in search results. That alone typically boosts click-through rate by 50 to 100% compared to plain blue-link listings.
None of this requires a bigger marketing budget. It just needs reviews collected, moderated, and displayed properly. Let’s get into how.
All your reviews in one place
Collect reviews, manage every response, and display them where they matter most.
Start Free →How BigCommerce’s built-in review system actually works

Before you decide between built-in reviews and a third-party app, you need to know what built-in can and can’t do. Most guides gloss over this, and it wastes everyone’s time.
What built-in reviews give you:
- A review form on every product page (star rating + text comment)
- A moderation queue where you approve or reject each review before it goes live
- An option to restrict reviews to verified buyers only
- Auto-approval toggle if you don’t want to moderate everyone
- Basic product rating schema (the stars in Google search results)
What built-in reviews don’t give you:
- Photo or video review uploads
- Automated review request emails (this is the big one)
- SMS or WhatsApp review collection
- Review widgets beyond the product page (homepage, checkout, collection pages)
- Importing reviews from another platform
- AI spam filtering
- Review response and reply workflows
For a brand-new store with under 50 products, built-in is enough to start. Flip it on, get your first dozen reviews manually, then upgrade when the volume gets painful.
How to enable product reviews in BigCommerce (admin path)
Here’s the exact click path. A lot of searches land on this page asking specifically where the setting lives, so I’ll make it easy to find.
Step 1: Open Settings from your admin dashboard

Log in to your BigCommerce admin. In the left sidebar, scroll to the bottom and click Settings. Not Store Settings, not Account Settings. Just Settings.
Step 2: Find Comments under the Products section

Inside Settings, scroll down to the Products section. Click Comments. Select Built-in from the options shown. This tells BigCommerce you want to use its native review system (not a third-party one).
Step 3: Enable Product Reviews

In the Built-in tab, check the box labeled Product reviews. Save. That’s it for turning reviews on.
One thing worth checking while you’re here: toggle on Only accept product reviews from past customers. This forces the review form to ask for an email address, which BigCommerce cross-references against your orders.
Reviewers who haven’t bought won’t get approved. Cuts spam by about 80% on most stores.
If you don’t see the Reviews tab on your product pages afterward, your theme probably needs a small tweak.
Most modern BigCommerce themes support it out of the box, but older Stencil themes may require you to enable the reviews section in the Theme Editor first.
How to moderate reviews the right way

Moderation is where most BigCommerce owners either over-moderate (delete anything under 5 stars) or under-moderate (approve everything and miss obvious spam). Both hurt trust.
Access the moderation queue
Go to Products → Product Reviews in your admin. You’ll see every submitted review with a status: Pending, Approved, or Rejected.
What to approve
- Any review that reads as if a real person wrote it, even if it’s 2 or 3 stars. Mixed reviews actually build more trust than a wall of 5-star content.
- Reviews with specific product details (size, fit, material, shipping time). These are gold for SEO and for other shoppers.
- Short reviews. A two-sentence “Good quality, arrived fast” is still useful social proof.
What to reject
- Reviews that mention competitor products by name (affiliate spam)
- Identical or near-identical text across multiple reviews (bot activity)
- Reviews that attack specific customer support staff by name instead of describing the issue
- Reviews for the wrong product (yes, this happens, especially on variable products)
What to never reject
Negative reviews about the product itself. Deleting honest criticism is the fastest way to lose trust with future shoppers. Respond to them professionally, offer a resolution, and leave them up.
Google also watches for stores that only publish 5-star reviews and downranks their rich snippet eligibility.
If negative reviews are piling up, the real fix is upstream: improve the product, the description, or the shipping experience. Not the review page.
All your reviews in one place
Collect reviews, manage every response, and display them where they matter most.
Start Free →How to collect more reviews (automation beats asking manually)

Most customers won’t leave a review unless you ask. That’s not laziness on their part. It’s just life. They bought the thing, they use the thing, they’ve moved on. Asking post-purchase is what unlocks volume.
Automate review requests after the right event
Trigger requests after delivery, completed service, booking completion, or product usage. Timing matters more than frequency.
- Ecommerce: 3–7 days after delivery
- Restaurants/local services: same day or within 24 hours
- SaaS/services: after a successful milestone or positive interaction.
Use SMS + email together
Email is still useful, but SMS usually gets faster opens. Many businesses now use both:
- Email for detailed requests
- SMS for quick review links
Send customers directly to your Google review page: Don’t make them search for your business manually. Use your direct Google review link or QR code.
Ask on high-intent touchpoints
Good moments include:
- order confirmation pages
- post-purchase pages
- appointment follow-ups
- customer support resolution emails
- packaging inserts
- receipts.
Use QR codes offline
Very effective for: restaurants, clinics, salons, retail stores, events.
Place them on receipts, tables, packaging, or signage.
Make leaving a review fast
Short path = higher conversions.
Avoid:
- long surveys
- multiple redirects
- account creation requirements
Follow up once (not repeatedly): A single reminder after 5–7 days can recover missed reviews. More than that starts feeling spammy.
How to display reviews where they actually convert

Collecting reviews is half the job. Displaying them where they influence buying decisions is the other half.
Where to place review widgets
Built-in reviews only show on the product page, under the description. That’s fine, but limited. A dedicated review app gives you widgets you can place anywhere:
- Product page, below the add-to-cart button. A star rating and review count right next to the buy button catch shoppers mid-decision.
- Collection/category pages. Star ratings on the product cards help shoppers pick which product to click. Massive CTR lift.
- Homepage “Wall of Love” section. A grid of recent reviews on the homepage is one of the highest-performing trust elements I’ve tested.
- Cart and checkout pages. A small testimonial carousel right before payment reduces cart abandonment.
- Footer trust badge. “4.8 stars from 2,400 reviews” in the footer builds site-wide authority.
Widget styles that work on BigCommerce
These are the widget types I recommend most often, in order of what I’d install first:
- Product review section with photos. Full review list on the product page with customer photos inline. This is the foundational one.
- Star rating badge. A clean “4.8 ★★★★★ (142 reviews)” under the product title. Quick scan, high signal.
- Review carousel on the homepage. Rotating the slider of top reviews. Great trust signal above the fold.
- Floating popup. Small slide-in notification showing a recent review. Subtle, not annoying when set to appear once per session.
- Wall of Love page. Dedicated /reviews or /testimonials page with filterable reviews. Helps with SEO and gives you a single link to share in email campaigns.
Don’t install every widget on day one. Start with the product page section and star badge. Add the others as your review volume grows.
The 4 best review apps for BigCommerce
I’ve tested most of the review apps on the BigCommerce App Marketplace across client stores. Here’s how they stack up in 2026.
| App | Free plan | Starts at | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| WiserReview | Yes, up to 100 requests/mo | $9/mo | Stores wanting photos, video, and automation without the enterprise tag |
| Stamped | Yes, limited | $23/mo | Stores that also want loyalty/referral bundled |
| Yotpo | Yes, basic | $15/mo (free limited) | Stores scaling past $500k/yr needing SMS + reviews |
| Fera | Yes, up to 20/mo | $9/mo | Smaller stores, import from Google/Facebook built-in |
1. WiserReview

WiserReview is what I use on most client stores when they need reviews with photos and video, automated collection via email, SMS, and WhatsApp, and a clean widget set that actually matches BigCommerce themes without theme editing.
WiserReview integrates robustly with BigCommerce, so you’ll be able to do a lot without “hacky” coding!
Key features:
- Automated review requests across email, SMS, and WhatsApp
- Photo and video review support (customer uploads directly)
- AI spam filtering that cuts out obvious junk before it hits your moderation queue
- Rich snippet schema for Google search stars (no code)
- Bulk import from Google, Amazon, CSV, and other platforms
- Free plan covers up to 100 review requests per month.

2. Stamped

Sent bundled reviews to loyalty programs and referral networks. If you want review collection and a points-based loyalty program from the same dashboard, it’s a solid pick.
The review-only side is competent but not best-in-class. I’d go to Stamped when loyalty is equally important to you as reviews.
3. Yotpo

Yotpo is the enterprise-scale option. Reviews plus SMS marketing plus loyalty plus subscriptions, all bundled.
Powerful, but pricing climbs fast past the free tier, and the UI has enough depth that smaller store owners get overwhelmed.
I’d pick Yotpo when a store is doing $500k+ per year and already needs SMS marketing anyway.
4. Fera

Fera is the newer challenger with a strong BigCommerce app store rating. What it does well: built-in imports from Google, Facebook, and Etsy reviews so you can aggregate existing social proof without manual CSVs.
Photo and video review collection is smooth. Free tier is limited (20 reviews/month) but reasonable for testing.
Want the full BigCommerce review stack without the enterprise price tag?
WiserReview ships photo and video reviews, automated email/SMS/WhatsApp collection, AI spam filtering, and rich snippet schema in one clean app. Free plan included.
Start Free →How to show star ratings in Google search results (rich snippets)

This is the single highest-ROI setup step after collecting reviews. Star ratings in Google search listings are the difference between a 2% CTR and a 4-5% CTR. Google pays attention when they work and flags stores when they don’t.
The easy way: use an app that handles schema automatically
Most modern review apps (WiserReview, Stamped, Yotpo, Fera) automatically inject the Product schema with aggregateRating into your product pages.
You turn on the rich snippet toggle inside the app, and it handles the JSON-LD code behind the scenes.
The manual way: edit your theme’s Stencil template
If you’re not using a review app, you can add schema by hand to your theme’s product-view.html template.
It’s a JSON-LD script block with your product name, price, SKU, and aggregateRating fields. Not for everyone, but it works if you want full control and no third-party dependency.
Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test
After setup, paste a product URL into search.google.com/test/rich-results. You want a green “Valid” result with aggregateRating detected.
Warnings are okay. Errors mean something’s wrong, and stars won’t show.
Importing existing reviews from another platform
Migrating from Shopify, WooCommerce, or another BigCommerce store? Don’t lose your review history. Most stores have hundreds or thousands of reviews representing years of social proof.
Losing them during a migration is painful and expensive to rebuild.
Two options, depending on the source:
If you have a CSV export from your old platform, you can import it directly into a review app. WiserReview, Stamped, and Fera all accept CSV imports with standard fields: product ID, rating, title, body, author name, and date. Field-level mapping during import handles any format differences.
If you’re migrating from a direct integration (such as Shopify’s Judge.me), most review apps offer native migration tools. The old platform exports to the new app with one click.

Start Free →Common problems with BigCommerce reviews (and how to fix them)

The most common issues BigCommerce stores face with product reviews, along with simple fixes to keep reviews visible, trustworthy, and working correctly.
Problem 1: Reviews aren’t showing on product pages
Usual cause: either your theme doesn’t have the review section in product-view.html, or reviews are stuck in Pending status, or your cache is stale.
Check the moderation queue first. Clear site cache. If still missing, the theme likely needs a template tweak.
Problem 2: Star ratings in Google search disappeared
Usually means Google downgraded your rich result eligibility because of one of three things:
- Review signals look thin,
- You have a duplicate schema (built-in + app both emitting Product schema), or
- Schema data doesn’t match what’s on the page.
Pick one source of schema. Make sure what’s in the schema matches the live page exactly.
Problem 3: You’re getting review spam from bots
Flip on. Only accept product reviews from past customers in your BigCommerce settings.
If you’re using a review app, enable the AI spam filter. Both together kill 95%+ of bot reviews.
Problem 4: Negative reviews piling up
Respond publicly, professionally, and offer a resolution. Don’t delete them. The store owners I’ve seen handle this best treat every negative review as free product feedback.
They fix the underlying issue (sizing chart, shipping partner, product description), and the next batch of reviews trends positive.
Problem 5: Customers can’t find where to leave a review
If the review tab is hidden until the first review is submitted (some themes do this by default), you need to either switch themes or add a manual “Leave a review” link below the product description.
Easy fix in theme settings.
How to disable reviews if you decide you don’t want them
Sometimes store owners decide reviews aren’t right for their catalog (usually B2B stores, dropshipping catalogs with thin review history, or very niche product lines). Disabling is reversible and takes 30 seconds.
Go to Settings → Comments → Built-in, uncheck Product reviews, save.
Reviews are hidden but not deleted, so you can turn them back on anytime.
Wrap up
Start with BigCommerce’s built-in reviews. Turn them on today, enable the verified-buyer setting, and clean up your moderation queue weekly. That gets you your first 20 reviews.
Once you’re collecting faster than you can moderate manually, or you want photo reviews, email automation, or stars in Google search, install a dedicated review app.
WiserReview is what I’d pick first for most stores in the under-$500k/year range. Stamped if loyalty matters. Yotpo if you’re scaling into SMS and enterprise territory.
The stores that win with reviews aren’t the ones with the fanciest widget.
They’re the ones who consistently ask every buyer, moderate honestly, respond to negatives publicly, and display reviews in the places that actually influence buying decisions. Boring, systematic, and extremely effective.
